‘Bureaucracy, rules, unresponsiveness – the three words I heard most often during my research period in Helsinki describing the general atmosphere. I think of my invitation by IHME as providing me with an important opportunity to try to change these things.’ – Kateřina Šedá

The artist chosen to devise IHME Project 2016 is Kateřina Šedá (b. 1977) from the Czech Republic. The main stage for her proposed project is a Helsinki icon: the tram. She intends to make trams a meeting place where passengers can experience something out of the ordinary and share it with others. Apart from the unusual venue, the line-up of musicians is also unexpected: Šedá wants to stage a mobile tram tour, starring some of the best international buskers. The project will thus bring the ambience of the international and the feel of their public transport, to Helsinki. Read more about the IHME Project 2016.

Making the project multicultural is important to the artist, which is why she wants to invite school classes to take the tour. This will give them a chance to learn about different cultures through music. For further details of the schools programme and the questionnaire about potential participation, click here.

The IHME Contemporary Art Festival invited Kateřina Šedá to devise IHME Project 2016 because she has been working in public space and collaborating with communities ever since graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague. Šedá’s works have been shown in numerous international exhibitions, e.g. the 5th Berlin Biennale and Documenta 12 – Kassel in 2011. This is the first time her work is being shown in Helsinki. The main partners of IHME Project 2016 are Helsinki City Transport (HKL) and Helsinki Regional Transport (HSL). Not only are they providing the mobile venue for the project, they are also sponsoring the prizes for the competitions. Read more about our partners here.

Each year, IHME produces a work in public space by an international artist. The public then has a chance to see the initial stages of this unique creation. The commissioned art work and the interpretations it evokes prompt independent thought and discussion. In the surrounding Festival art and science, past and present meet in a multi-faceted programme of events. IHME is open to everyone who is interested in life and contemporary art.
