The history of the IHME Contemporary Art Festival will be recorded between book covers when the German publishers Hatje Cantz Verlag releases an anniversary volume documenting a decade of the Festival. The commemorative publication in English contains discussions about the ten IHME Projects, plus pictures of each one. An introduction has been written by Director of Arnolfini in Bristol, Claire Doherty, who is also founded the UK-based Situations, which has been working with public art since 2002. Doherty has also edited books on public art, including From Studio to Situations: Contemporary Art and the Question of Context (2004) and Public Art (Now): Out of Time, Out of Place (2015).
Ten IHME artists, ten voices, one book
Those discussing their commissioned artworks, their content, and each year’s special themes in IHME’s anniversary volume are: Miroslaw Balka, Yael Bartana, Christian Boltanski, Jeremy Deller, Theaster Gates, Antony Gormley, Henrik Håkansson, Susan Philipsz, Kateřina Šedá and Superflex. Each discussion also includes a partner in conversation personally chosen by the artist.
“Over its first decade, IHME has produced ten works in public space and time for a wide variety of publics to experience. They have offered city dwellers surprising encounters, and challenged the conception of what art in public space can be and of who can be called the authors of the work. At the same time, they have created a new narrative about Helsinki – and Finland – as a place,” says the anniversary publication’s editor and Executive Director of Pro Arte Foundation Finland Paula Toppila.
Making a record of the IHME Projects seemed a natural step, especially now in 2018, when this Festival focusing on transient art has reached ten years of age.
“We have challenged the artists to break new ground in their own working process and enabled a variety of experiments and new departures. One common factor in these works is their transience, and so it is marvellous that we can honour this anniversary year by bringing all the works together inside a single cover in both images and words,” says Chair of the Board of Pro Arte Foundation Finland Tuula Arkio.
Layout by Helsinki-based Dog Design
The volume’s publisher, the German Hatje Cantz Verlag, is renowned for its books on art and photography. The choice of layout designer fell on Helsinki design office Dog Design, where the anniversary publication is the responsibility of one of the office’s founders, graphic designer Ilona Ilottu.
“We are delighted about this collaboration! And IHME’s superb international contemporary art festival and the prestigious publisher set the bar high for the book’s design,” Ilottu says.
You can follow the progress of the book project on IHME’s social-media channels and through IHME’s newsletter. The anniversary publication will be sold and marketed internationally by Hatje Cantz. The book is due for release in spring 2019.
