This year’s 6th IHME Contemporary Art Festival centres on national identity and multiculturalism. The IHME Project True Finn – Tosi Suomalainen by Yael Bartana that redefines Finnishness makes the future utopia true for a moment. The same themes will be addressed in the IHME Days’ discussions, films, the Club and workshops. On Saturday the artist herself will take part in the discussions in an interview with curator Maria Lind.
The IHME Days film programme includes films by the artist Adrian Piper who is known for dealing with racism and xenophobia in her works. On Sunday her Passing Beyond Passing will get its world premiere in Helsinki. The programme will offer a unique opportunity to see Yael Bartana’s works in Finland for the first time, such as the trilogy …And Europe Will Be Stunned (2007-2011), which caused a stir at the Venice Biennale in 2011.
In the workshop by visual artist Katja Tukiainen the participants will have a chance to imagine the world as nicer place. In the Living Library and Shared Stories workshops prejudices will be challenged. Advance registration starts now.
The IHME Project premiere: Bio Rex cinema (Helsinki) Monday, March 31 at 18:00, after which, the film will be viewable online on the Yle Areena TV on-demand service until May 31.
The IHME Days: the Old Student House (Helsinki), 4-6 April, 2014.
